these images were created using three vintage cameras: the polaroid sx-70, canon cannonet rangefinder, and diana toy camera. with them I employ perspective and composition as filters, amplifying signals hidden among the noise of the visual world. I seek out the moment that an image is resolved. many are ephemeral, like an airplane flying past a lamppost. while others have been waiting to be recorded, unchanged for years. polaroid manipulation exploits a flaw in the film's chemistry that leaves the emulsion malleable for a short time after exposure. during that window, the pigments in the film can be pushed and distorted with blunt tools. when I produce a polaroid manipulation, I focus on two components: capturing the image (recognizing a composition at the ideal moment), and enhancing the image (altering it to record my impressions). the ability to blend image and emotion together is what I appreciate most about the technique. as film photography gives way to digital, this process has all but disappeared. original sx-70 film is no longer manufactured.
limited edition fine art giclees on canvas are available for these images. contact nh@nickharing.com
